The follow up to the wildly successful "The Wedding Party" had such a huge buzz surrounding it from the get-go, some sceptics cast doubt on whether it would live up to the hype. However, "The Wedding Party 2: Destination Dubai" was THE Nollywood blockbuster - not just of last year, but of all time!
Let's take a look at the movie that took Nollywood by storm:
A Timeless Love Story
Following on from "The Wedding Party", we see the newlyweds from the first movie - Dunni and Dozie - loved up and...pregnant! It was a big enough leap for the supposed eternal bachelor to get married, but to be a father? Now that's something else...
After meeting Deirdre, the bridesmaid at his brother's wedding, Nonso and her hit it off and the couple are in that lovely honeymoon phase of their relationship, where everything is hearts and flowers...
Everything changes when, on a romantic dinner date, Nonso manages to accidentally propose to Deirde! She immediately says yes in a flush of excitement and from then on, the impending wedding is an unstoppable force.
When Deirdre's parents fly over to meet their future son-in-law's family, there are culture clashes, personality clashes - well, let's just say it doesn't bode well for the wedding.
To add to the stress, Nonso announces they are getting married in a month...in Dubai! Hilarity, mishaps and outright ridiculousness ensue when both families head out to Dubai for the wedding of the year. The question is, with all this chaos and stress surrounding them, plus the fact that Nonso didn't even intend to propose in the first place, will this wedding actually happen?!
"The Wedding Party 2" was released last year, on December 15. In that opening weekend alone, the movie raked in 73.3 million Naira, making it the highest grossing Nigerian film ever.
Things just grew from there - considering this is a sequel, it's amazing that the momentum just kept going.
By the end of the first week in January this year, it had grossed a whopping 300 million Naira. It was then released in 17 countries across Africa, plus in the UK, where it had the most successful opening day ever for a Nollywood movie release.
But it's not just about money and numbers - the fact that a Nollywood movie received such recognition and praise around the world spells change for this ever-growing industry. "The Wedding Party 2" set the tone for Nollywood movies and it seems the only way is up!
So, today's the big day! The biggest ever Nollywood movie is now yours to own forever!
