His face is plastered all over the recent James Bond film with features in Spectre (2015), Skyfall (2012), Quantum of Solace (2008), and Casino Royale (2006). This week’s Hollywood Spotlight highlights the multi-award winning British theatre spectacle Daniel Craig, who stars in the highly raved Knives Out (2019), set to release on Nov. 27, 2019.

Born on March 2, 1968 in Cheshire, U.K., Daniel Wroughton Craig is the younger of two. His interest in acting spurred through trips to the Liverpool Everyman Theatre arrange by his mother, starting his acting career early at age six through school theatre plays. Though his mother was the driving force behind his artistic aspirations, Craig took it upon himself to play roles in “Oliver”, “Romeo and Juliet”, and “Cinderella” at Hilbre High School in West Wirby, Wirral.

After briefly attending Calday Grange Grammar School as a sixth form student, he was accepted into the National Youth Theatre at age 16, allowing for him to further his acting career in London. Later on, after multiple auditions for arts schools, he was accepted at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama at the Barbican, where he graduated in 1991 after three years of study under Colin McCormack. His first breakthrough was playing an Afrikaner in The Power of One in 1992, allowing him to further expand through lead roles in titles like Obsession (1997) and Some Voices (2000).

His biggest breakthrough came in 2005, when he was contacted by Eon Productions to portray James Bond in the new Casino Royale (2006) film. Though his body was not considered a good fit for the traditional James Bond character by many critics, his performance was highly acclaimed and led to the film grossing over $590  million worldwide, making it the highest-grossing James Bond film until Skyfall (2012). Afterwards, Craig continued to play roles in the James Bond series and is anticipated to play James Bond once again in the 25th installment of the James Bond series No Time to Die (2020). Outside of the James Bond series, Craig has starred in Defiance (2008), Cowboys & Aliens (2011), The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (2011), and The Adventures of Tintin (2017).

With such a wealth of experience in the action genre, it will be quite refreshing to see him in the whodunnit mystery film Knives Out (2019). As wealthy crime novelist Harlan Thrombey invites his dysfunctional extended family to his remote mansion on his 85th birthday, he is found dead by members of the family after the birthday party. The film follows Daniel Craig playing Benoit Blanc, an experienced detective called to investigate the case. After premiering at the Toronto International Film Festival on Sept. 7, 2019, the film received overwhelming positive reviews from critics.

Here are some more fun facts about Daniel Craig:

  • Craig is an atheist.

  • In October 2008, Craig paid £4 million for an apartment in a converted old house in Primrose Hill, London. He also has homes in Sunninghill, Berkshire and Tribeca, New York.
