This week, our Hollywood Spotlight is on Chris Hemsworth, the star of newly released “Thor: Ragnarok”! Since bursting onto our screens with his mighty hammer, this Hollywood all-star has continued to surprise audiences around the world, not only as an action hero but also in his other witty comedic roles.

Born in Melbourne, Australia on 11 August 1983, Chris is the middle child of Leonie and Craig Hemsworth. His older brother, Luke, and his younger brother, Liam, are also well-known Hollywood actors. Chris’ childhood was spent both in the cosmopolitan city of Melbourne and in the rugged Australian outback, in the cattle ranching town of Bulman.
He describes a steady, happy childhood, despite moving back and forth between these polar opposite worlds several times during his youth; in fact, he remembers his life living on cattle stations with much fondness. While living by the coast, Chris developed an obsession with surfing, as did his brothers. They would wake each other up at 4 AM to catch the best waves before heading to school. He credits his childhood of living in wild places and experiencing such different environments with gifting him his love for travel and adventure.

Hemsworth kicked off his acting career working on several TV series, but his first big break was in 2004. He had auditioned for a role in the popular Australian soap, “Home & Away”, but didn’t receive the part. However, his talent had obviously noticed because he was called back to audition for another part. He bagged the job and moved to Sydney, going on to star in 171 episodes of the show. After three years, Hemsworth left the cast of “Home & Away” and moved to the United States, and, well, the rest, as they say, is history.

J.J. Abrams cast Hemsworth for the role of James T. Kirk’s father in 2009’s “Star Trek Reboot”.  It was a small part but his talent was recognised; Shortly after, he starred in “Cabin in the Woods”, which was shot in 2009 and released in 2012. After his performance in “Star Trek Reboot” and footage from “Cabin in the Woods”, he was encouraged to audition for the role which he is now famous for the hammer-wielding superhero, Thor.

Since the success of the 2011 blockbuster, Hemsworth went on to star in 2012’s “Red Dawn” and “Snow White and the Huntsman”, “Rush” and “Star Trek: Into Darkness” in 2013, and “Blackhat” in 2015, among others. He has continued to play Thor; in fact, he has performed the role 8 times since 2011, most recently in “Thor: Ragnarok”, which was released last week.

Although he is clearly perfectly built to play the strong hero, Hemsworth has proven his versatility by taking on various comedic roles. In 2015, he starred in “Vacation”, alongside Ed Helms and last year he played the role of male bimbo Kevin in “Ghostbusters”. He has also hosted “Saturday Night Live”, and not just once but twice in 2015! Earlier this year, the director of “Thor: Ragnarok”, Taika Waititi, promoted the movie with two hilarious shorts showing us what Thor is up to between filming.

So, by this point, we’ve covered Hemsworth’s career path to date. Now, let’s take a look behind the scenes: Hemsworth is married to Spanish actress and model Elsa Pataky, who he met on a blind date in 2010. They live in Byron Bay, a small town on Australia’s East Coast with their five-year-old daughter, India Rose, and their twin sons, Tristan and Sasha, aged three.

When he’s not on location, Hemsworth’s favourite place to be is in the water. His early passion for surfing is as strong as ever and he is already teaching his young children. Hemsworth’s personal trainer, Luke Zocchi, is also a childhood friend; they have known each other since they were 6 years old! Zocchi now travels with him to film sets around the world to keep him in shape. A true man of action, Hemsworth also boxes and does Muay Thai.

He is known for being extremely well-grounded, despite being in the limelight and globally recognised. He credits his family and friends for keeping his feet on the ground and says he got the playboy lifestyle out of his system at an early age, specifically while working on “Home & Away”.

Hemsworth has received various awards, including Favourite Action Movie Star at the People’s Choice Awards, the Choice Movie Award: Sci-Fi/Fantasy at the 2014 and 2015 Teen Choice Awards and Favourite Movie Actor at this year’s Kid’s Choice Awards.
